Collecting
-
The collectors are read-only regular programs. No data is changed, except
for the effects of writing a result file, and some system-dependent changes
of e.g. access time of objects. The collectors are best run with the rights
to read everything, but that is not necessary.
-
The AIX 4.x collector reads file properties, the configurations of users,
groups, mounts, internet services, etc., and the installed packages.
-
The MacOS X 10.x collector reads file properties, the configurations of users,
groups, mounts, internet services, etc., the installed packages, the
Netinfo and OpenDirectory databases and Preferences.
-
The Linux 2.x collector reads file properties, the configurations of users,
groups, mounts, internet services, etc., and the installed RPM packages.
-
The Windows NT/2000 collector reads file properties, the registry and
Active Directory and the configurations of users, groups and servers.
-
Adding sub-collectors for your non-standard applications is usually possible within
a few days
-
Collecting takes a few minutes, so a daily collect is obligatory
Checking
-
Collections can be checked against any type of requirement. Some examples are:
-
is the system secure
-
is the system in the state as expected by the organization
-
has the system not changed since yesterday (or since e.g. installation time)
-
is this system equal to its twin
-
Requirements can easily check any information against any other information
in this collection or any other given collection (including collections
from an other OS).
External information can be used in the requirements.
Any logic can be applied in the requirements.
Data from your own sub-collector is used flawlessly.
-
Requirement failures can be grouped (based on the requirement or on the
object) for later viewing or processing
-
X|support provides requirements on
-
basic consistency within one system
-
basic security within one system
-
fast comparing of two systems
-
detailed comparing of two systems
-
Checking will take a few minutes. Only if large amounts of data (e.g.
500.000 files) are thorougly checked (e.g. all properties) it will take
some minutes more.
Graphical Viewing
-
The graphical viewer can show any collection
-
The graphical viewer runs on all major graphical platforms: Mac, Windows and
X Windows
-
Excellent browsing through the results. Some of the highlights are:
-
viewing failures in context or viewing only the failures
-
jumping from a failure to the object
-
viewing the results at machine level or at a higher level
-
revolutionary treemap view for failures and e.g. disk usage
-
selecting objects based on any criterium
Automation
-
Master server on a non-critical system, collectors on your critical systems.
Secure communication between the systems.
-
Simple but unique scheduling of tasks
-
Extendible with your own actions
